Known limitations

The following list describes known limits or boundaries currently under investigation and review as of the current release. Information in this section is subject to change in upcoming releases. For information regarding additional functionality or known limitations, refer to Release Notes or Technical Specifications.

Collection

Large File Set Collection. For efficiency and speed when collecting larger file sets, we recommend archiving files in ZIP files prior to collection and then collecting the ZIP files using the Epiq Discovery web client. You can also collect files using the Epiq Discovery Desktop Client. By using Epiq Discovery Desktop Client, you can harness system file capabilities and avoid website timeouts during extended upload times.

Microsoft 365 Collection. The following collection limitations apply to collecting data via Microsoft 365 collection.

  • When collecting documents from Outlook mailbox, the system cannot collect the permanently deleted emails from the Deleted Items folder.

  • When collecting documents from OneDrive, the system cannot collect the files from Recycle bin.

Mobile Data Collection. Epiq Discovery can only process mobile data collected as XML via Cellebrite, version 7.6.0 or later.

Website Collection. The following collection limitations apply to collecting data via the web.

  • up to 20 GB per file
  • up to 1 TB total data

Process

Epiq Discovery has the following limitations during processing.

  • Extraction of embedded images. For embedded images, the default is set to extract over 15 KB of embedded images for email files. For all other file types, embedded images are not extracted. To change this limit, refer to the Modify project information topic.

  • Language detection. Epiq Discovery does not run the language detection job on a document when it contains less than 250 characters.

  • Default and maximum extracted text sizes of long text fields. The table below shows the default text size of a long text field and the maximum text size you can specify for a long text field. To adjust the maximum text size of a long text field, refer to the Modify project information topic.

Promote

A Promotion job cannot exceed a maximum of 1.4 million documents.

The ability to identify PII /PHI currently only supports the English language. In addition, this function is not available for the following regions: South Africa and France.

Epiq Discovery does not run the entity identification job on a document if it contains less than 250 characters.

Review/Inspect

AI Text Summarization.

  • The AI Text Summarization feature is currently available for US and UK customers.

  • Currently, using the text summarization process you can summarize up to a maximum of 450KB or approximately 450,000 characters per document (roughly 150 pages). If the document size exceeds the maximum size for summarization, it is skipped.

Conceal Documents. We recommend that a conceal job not exceed a maximum of 500K documents.

Default maximum document size for natives in new projects. When creating a new project, including when you copy an existing project, the system sets the maximum document size setting to the default value of 50 MB.

Download. Using the web, you can download native document files up to 1 GB. To download larger document files, include them as part of an export or production. In addition, in the Viewer you can download any size audio and video files within the Player.

Export Documents. We recommend that an export job not exceed a maximum of 500K documents. At this time, exporting images does not currently support sets loaded with single page image formats.

OCR.Using the web, Epiq Discovery can OCR up to 75 MB per document.Printing. Limited by PrizmDoc to 100 pages per document.

Persistent highlights. Make sure to highlight the most specific or unique terms possible. In general, highlighted terms show the best results for up to 500 total highlighted terms per document, and no more than 700 highlights of the same term within a document. Exceeding these recommendations can result in performance issues.

Transcribe. Based on a limitation in AWS, each transcribe job must contain less than 250 documents.

Transfer to Relativity. Due to the RelativityOne limitation, Epiq Discovery does not support the transfer of image files other than single-page TIFF (Group IV) and JPG files to RelativityOne.

View large text files. We recommend viewing large text files, over 2 MB, in the Undocked Viewer.

Reports and CSV Files

Epiq Discovery outputs data to reports and CSV files but does not apply limits to output. However, the application that you open the report or CSV file may impose limitations. For example, Excel applies the following limits to any file it opens.

  • A maximum of 1,048,576 rows. Excel cannot expand beyond its maximum limit, even if the rows in a report exceed that number.

  • A maximum of 32,767 characters per cell. Excel applies this limit even if the cell contains more characters than that (which could occur when exporting long text field data such as Track Changes using Export Fields to CSV).

Desktop Client

We recommend running only one Desktop Client at a time on any computer.

Production

Limited to 35,000 pages per a single document.

We recommend that a production job not exceed a maximum of 500K documents.

Administration

DataHub. When using DataHub, understand the following limitations.

  • We recommend using DataHub to download up to 60 GB of data. For data above that maximum, use Desktop Client instead. Similarly, when uploading to DataHub, we recommend uploading no more than 1 GB at a time. When you need to upload data that exceeds that maximum, use Desktop Client instead.

  • When loading files to DataHub, understand that network stability is required. Meaning, if the network connection is interrupted during an upload, the system cannot resume the upload at a later time.

  • Currently, in DataHub, you can only download a single file at a time.

Cross-Projects Jobs page. Performance on this page can be affected when a significant number of users (more than 25) access the Cross-Projects Jobs page at the same time. Should that occur, we recommend viewing cross-job activity at off-peak times.
